As the United Kingdom debated whether or not it wsihes to remain as a member of the European Union, one of Englands leading financial institutions is looking to join forces with a counterparty on the continent.

This week news broke that the owners of the London Stock Exchange were in talks with the owners of Deutsche Boerse, which runs the exchange in Frankfurt. This is the LSEs second attempt to purchase the German exchange operator.

According to the BBC, both exchanges would continue to operate under their original names and the LSE would own 45.6 percent of the merged group and Deutsche Boerse would hold the remaining 54.4 percent.

Stock exchange mergers are nothing new in the global financial community. They are often a tried and true method for an ambitious exchange operator to move into new markets or for second-tier markets to jump to the next level. In recent cases, its a chance for an older, slower exchange to acquire the technology of a newer and more innovative trading floor.
