Market Structure Dominates the Panels of the Mid-Atlantic STA

Traders and brokers from the Baltimore and Washington DC corridor debate the crowded landscape of exchanges and new regulations.

What exactly is going on?

Years after the launch of Reg-NMS, the topic at nearly every regional Security Traders Association can be boiled down to dark pools vs. exchanges, what is on the mind of the SEC and how are investment firms dealing with disruptive innovations such as algorithmic trading, high-frequency trading and ATSs.

At the recent Mid-Atlantic STA Winter Conference, market structure took center stage yet again for the meetings panels.

Mett Kinak, head of global equity market structure and electronic trading of T. Rowe Price, interviewed Ronan Ryan, the chief strategy officer of IEX Group. In the conferences Fireside Chat, president of Patomak Global Partners Daniel Gallagher interviewed former SEC Commissioner Stephen Luparello. As head of the SECs Division of Trading and Markets, he has been in the middle of the market structure storm. Finally Robert Novy, a deputy assistant director for the U.S. Secret Service, discussed cyber security.
