FLASH FRIDAY: Summer Trading 2013, 10 Years On

FLASH FRIDAY is a weekly content series looking at the past, present and future of capital markets trading and technology. FLASH FRIDAY is sponsored by Instinet, a Nomura company.

As the markets head into the July 4 weekend, what better way to kick it off than with a look-back at a Markets Media summer event from a decade ago?

This is actually the third-annual Flash Friday retrospective on the now defunct Summer Trading event, which was meant as a quick hit — a few afternoon panels followed by rooftop networking. Possibly the last industry event before the summer getaway season. See the 2022 version of this article here and 2021 here.

Summer Trading 2013 content consisted of three 20-minute “Conversations”: a big-picture convo between SkyBridge Capital’s Anthony Scaramucci and Markets Media CEO Mohan Virdee; a fixed income convo between Jim Switzer of AllianceBernstein and Rick McVey of MarketAxess; and an equity convo between David Lewis of Franklin Templeton and Jose Marques of Deutsche Bank.

The Conversations were followed by a “What’s Hot and What’s Not” panel session and then rooftop networking. Summer Trading 2013 was held at Hudson Terrace in New York on the afternoon / evening of Wednesday, July 10, 2013. The weather was 84 degrees, cloudy with light rain, according to timeanddate.com; the precipitation moved the rooftop networking inside.
