>>Dan Charney joins Cowen Group as managing director and co-head of equities in New York. Charney shares duties with Tom O’Mara, co-head of equities, in overseeing Cowen’s domestic and international equity sales and trading businesses. Charney comes from Jefferies & Co. where he was most recently managing director and head of global electronic trading services and head of U.S. sales trading. Prior, he was head of West Coast equity distribution at UBS Securities. He reports to the chief executive of Cowen’s broker-dealer business, Jeffrey Solomon.
>> Investment bank Merriman Capital has made five key hires for its trading execution and capital markets services groups.
In the trading execution group, Anthony Stamos joins as managing director and will be based in New York. Stamos, a 16-year veteran, comes from BGC/Cantor Fitzgerald and Direct Access Partners, where he specialized in technical trading of specific industry trends. He began his career on the Boston Stock Exchange.
Anthony LaBella, Kimberly Opiatowski and Wayne Yu also join the New York office as vice presidents. LaBella, a 17-year pro, is the former director of international trading at Direct Access Partners. Prior to that, he held sales trading positions at European Securities Network and ITG. Opiatowski, a 10-year veteran, comes to Merriman from Pali Capital where she covered both hedge funds and long-only accounts. Yu, a 13-year veteran, was most recently vice president of international equities trading at Jefferies & Co., where he focused on trading Asian and Canadian ADRs. He began his career as an international equities trader at Merrill Lynch.
In its capital markets services group, Joel Achramowicz joins as managing director of research and advisory services. Achramowicz, an 18-year veteran, has worked for Blaylock Robert Van, MDB Capital Group and Investec-PMG Capital. He is based in Merriman’s San Francisco office.
>> Deutsche Bank hires Thomas Patrick as its new head of equity trading Americas, a new position. Patrick, a 30-year veteran, was formerly co-head of global banking and markets strategy for BofA Merrill. He joined Merrill Lynch in 1993. He will be based in New York and reports to Jeff Mayer, Deutsche Bank’s head of corporate and investment banking for North America, and Garth Ritchie, global head of equities.
>>Brad Desjarlais joins Tourmaline Partners as a director covering Asian equities. Desjarlais, a 14-year veteran, was head trader at LR Global for the last four-and-a-half years. Prior to that, he was a trader at Trivium Capital Management and a senior equity trader at Columbia Management. He got his trading start at agency broker Instinet back in 1998.
>> Oppenheimer hires two professionals to run it’s newly opened Chicago office.
Sales trader Donald O’Shaughnessy joins as a managing director and head of trading O’Shaughnessy, a 20-year veteran is charged with leading the new office and covering Midwest clients. Prior, he worked at Jefferies & Co. for four years as a sales trader covering the Midwest. He also did a stint at Susquehanna Financial in its Chicago office. He reports to Peter Feinberg, head of institutional equities trading.
Also joining as a director of institutional trading is Dan Stahlschmidt, a two-year veteran and sales trader who also hails from Jefferies, where he was a vice president. Prior, he served as an aviator in the U.S. Navy. He reports to O’Shaughnessy.
>> AX Trading names John King as a managing director to head sales and help build the AX’s call-auction trading network. King has more than 20 years in the industry, working in institutional sales and trading in equities and fixed income. He spent 11 years at Liquidnet, helping launch a Midwest office in 2001 and then its Canadian subsidiary in 2006. Prior to that, he did stints at Bridge Information Systems, Everen Securities, the now-defunct DLJ and Mabon Securities. He reports to Pete Jenkins, who heads equities.
>> Discount brokerage E*Trade Financial Corp. has named Frank Petrilli as its new chairman of the board. With than 30 years of securities experience, Petrilli was most recently chief executive officer of defunct Surge Trading. Previously, he was CEO of both TD Waterhouse and Nexxar Group. Petrilli replaces Steven Freiberg, E*Trade’s current CEO, who had been the interim chairman since May, when former Citigroup executive Robert Druskin stepped down to become chairman of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp.
>>Jason Tobias joins Triad Securities Ltd. as managing director and chief business development officer for the New York-based brokerage firm’s London office. Tobias, a 15-year veteran, will look to expand Triad’s presence in Europe. Tobias was previously at Millennium Partners, where he spent his entire career. He joined as a trader in 1996 and moved to head the European trading desk in 2000, where he spent eight years.
>> JonesTrading appoints Seth Michaels as managing director to head its new advisor services business. Michaels, a 20-plus year veteran, comes from Barclays, where he managed the firm’s high-net-worth client financing business. Prior, he managed Neuberger Berman Clearing Services, which provides execution, reporting, custody and clearing services to correspondent broker-dealers, investment advisors and hedge funds. He reports to Packy Jones, the firm’s chairman and chief executive.
>> EAB Investment Group, a hedge fund advisory firm, hires Michael Frank as managing director of business development. Frank, a 31-year veteran, will focus on expanding the firm’s client base. For the last 17-years, he was at Gateway Partners, a specialist and market making firm on the Amex that he started. He began his career in 1980 as an options market maker on the floor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and helped build Rockrimmon Securities.
>> Patrick Fay joins Williams Financial Group in Dallas as director of equity sales and trading. Fay, a 32-year veteran, was previously managing director of equity trading and a three-year board member at Great Falls, Mont.-based D.A. Davidson & Co. He was a past president of the Nashville Security Dealers Association and a member of the Boston Stock Exchange Trading Committee. He reports to head of capital markets Claude Connelly.
>> Former MF Global execs Richard Parker and Anson Sager have joined Loop Capital to expand its equity sales and trading group in New York. Parker, a veteran of more than 20 years, was the former head of U.S. cash sales and trading at MF Global. Prior, he headed sales and trading at Sanford Group, as well as doing a six-year stint at SoundView Technology as head of listed trading. Sager, a 16-year veteran, was formerly a senior sales trader at MF Global and earlier at SoundView. He reports to Chris Levin.Shauna Lambright also joins the firm as a managing director in its transition management services group. Lambright, a 20-year pro, was head of transition management at Knight Capital Americas for the last three years. She reports to Kourtney Ratliff.
