Janney Raids Knight, Picks Up Almost Dozen Traders

Janney Montgomery Scott announced the hire today of 11 sales traders and sector traders, including nine from Knight Capital Group.

The hires come as the firm announces it is expanding its coverage for institutional trading desks and just two months after former Knight executive vice president Greg Voetsch joined Janney.

“As the business continues to grow more competitive, it is critical that we differentiate Janney from our competitors,” Voetsch, now Janney’s head of equities, said in a statement. “By enhancing distribution and trading, we are in a much better position to monetize our research.”

Voetsch spent about 10 years at Knight, the market making firm that recently agreed to be bought by high-speed trading firm and market maker GETCO. When he left in January to join Janney, he was Knight’s head of global equities.

Among those hired from Knight are: Michael Ballan, Robert Jamieson, Andrew Leveen, Jeff Breay, David Hall, Robert Hogan, Joel Kulina, Greg McManus, and Brian Scollard. Ballan, Jamieson and Leveen are all New York-based sales traders. Breay and Hall are Boston-based sales traders. Hogan is a sales trader in Janney’s new Atlanta office.

Kulina, McManus and Scollard are all sector traders based in New York. They trade technology, healthcare, and industrial stocks, respectively. Scollard actually left Knight in May 2012.

James McCarthy joins Janney from Weeden & Co. He is a sales trader in the Philadelphia-based firm’s New York office. Christopher Weiss was previously a sales trader with Thinkequity. He will work out of Janney’s New York office.
