Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt will address a Security Traders Association conference for the first time Oct. 12, in Boca Raton, Fla.
"It's persistence on the part of STA and cooperation on the parts of some members of [Levitt's] staff that got him to accept," said Lee Korins, president and chief executive of the association.
Levitt's appearance was not considered definitive as of press time. But it seemed unlikely that the SEC chairman would balk, barring some unforeseen crisis.
Neither Ullman nor Korins could cite the subject of Levitt's Thursday afternoon feature address.
Main Event
The STA's annual conference, Oct. 11-15, is the primary conference among four conferences the organization conducts each year. A political briefing with elected officials and regulators in Washington, is scheduled each spring. A technical conference usually follows in early summer.
Of special interest to STA members, according to Korins, will be a media panel discussion in which industry professionals can grill the national reporters who usually grill them. CNBC's Ron Insana, CNN's Myron Kandel, TheStreet.com's Dave Kansas and Bloomberg News' Matthew Winkler are slated for the panel, "The Role of the Media in a 24-Hour Market."
Political satirists Al Franken (from the left), and P.J. O'Rourke (from the right) will provide laughs as keynote speakers on Oct. 14.
"There'll be enough to keep people interested, I think," Korins said.
At least 55 vendors have rented booths in the exhibition area, Korins said. He expects at least 1,200 industry professionals to attend the five-day event.
