ON THE MOVE: Russell Investments Selects Zach Buchwald; Marty Flanagan to Retire from Invesco

Zach Buchwald

Zach Buchwald has been selected to serve as Chief Executive Officer and as Chairman of the Russell Investments’s board of directors. Based in the firm’s global headquarters in Seattle, Buchwald will take the helm effective May 1 as Russell Investments’ eighth CEO in 87 years. He will succeed Michelle Seitz, who departed the firm late last year. Buchwald joins Russell Investments from BlackRock, where as the head of its institutional business in North America he was responsible for delivering BlackRock’s investment capabilities to the firm’s institutional clients. 

Marty Flanagan

Marty Flanagan has decided to retire as President and CEO of Invesco on June 30, 2023. He will also step down from the Invesco Board on June 30, 2023. He will continue as Chairman Emeritus through December 31, 2024, providing advice and guidance to the company. Andrew Schlossberg, Senior Managing Director and Head of the Americas, will become President and CEO of Invesco and a member of the Invesco Board of Directors on June 30, 2023. Schlossberg has been in the asset management industry since 1996 and with Invesco Ltd. since 2001. He has served in multiple leadership roles across the company’s businesses and locations. 

Harvey M. Schwartz

Carlyle has appointed Harvey M. Schwartz as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board, effective February 15, 2023. Bill Conway will step down as Interim CEO, maintaining his role as Co-Chairman of the Board. With a career spanning more than 35 years in the industry, Schwartz is the former President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of The Goldman Sachs Group, and prior to that, served as the firm’s Chief Financial Officer. He also held leadership roles across a broad range of the firm’s operations, including its Securities and Investment Banking divisions, where he was instrumental in driving the growth of a number of the firm’s client franchises. 

Daniel Gamba will serve as Northern Trust’s new President of Asset Management (NTAM), effective April 3. He will join Northern Trust’s Management Group and report to Chief Executive Officer Michael O’Grady. Gamba joins Northern Trust from BlackRock, Inc., where he spent 22 years and served as co-head of Fundamental Equities and as a member of BlackRock’s Global Operating, Portfolio Management Group Executive and Human Capital committees. Gamba has broad-based global experiences across fundamental active, systematic and index products.

Metaco has appointed former global Head of Digital Asset Infrastructure at IBM, Peter DeMeo as Chief Product Officer, and former IBM lead architect, Angel Nunez Mencias as Chief Customer Officer. In addition to bolstering its executive team, Metaco has invested in key personnel across research and development, engineering and customer services to ensure the continued implementation of industry-leading custody solutions and fulfill customer and growth ambitions. 

Drawbridge has appointed Nick Pastoressa as Chief Product & Technology Officer. Pastoressa brings more than two decades of product and technology expertise to Drawbridge, having led the development of data, analytics and workflow solutions from concept to delivery across multiple industries. He has spearheaded technology, product, content and UX teams throughout his career, most recently as CPTO for Credit Benchmark, a pioneer in bank-sourced consensus credit ratings. 

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has selected Kristen Baldwin to be the agency’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), effective February 26, 2023. Baldwin previously served as the Assistant Administrator for Information and Technology Services, and the CIO, at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 

Ralph Berg, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Capital Markets at OMERS, will succeed Satish Rai as Chief Investment Officer, effective April 1, 2023. Rai will transition to an advisory role until his retirement from OMERS in late 2024. Berg has a decade of experience at OMERS in a variety of leadership roles. As Global Head of OMERS Capital Markets, he has been responsible for public market investments which currently represent just over half of OMERS net investment assets.  

MarketAxess has appointed Pierce Lord as Head of Data Product. Lord joins MarketAxess from ICE where his focus was on business development and commercialization of fixed income analytics and indices. Prior to ICE, he was at Bloomberg where he was charged with the development and management of Bloomberg Valuation, its pricing business for Global Corporates, Agencies, and Munis. 

Bhas Nalabothula has been appointed head of US institutional rates at Tradeweb, according to his LinkedIn. He has been with the firm since 2013, most recently as Global Head of Emerging Markets.
