Traders Want Their Market Data Tools To Go

Smartphones and tablets are winning the hearts and minds of traders but the death of the traditional desktop is far off, according to Greenwich Associates.

If you need further proof that smartphones and tablets are the norm inside investment firms, Greenwich Associates has some data to share. The Stamford, Connecticut-based market research firms latest report, The Evolution of Market Data Desktop Technology, reveals that 69 percent of market data technology users around the world use their market data desktop solutions mobile capabilities.

The study participants included buy-side traders, portfolio managers and analysts, according to a recent press statement.

Although the professionals surveyed assign relatively low importance and expectations to such mobile capabilities today, they have high hopes for sophisticated mobile functionality in the coming two years. They want functionality that they enjoy and use on the desktop solutions they use on the trading floor, including the ability to execute trades and perform advanced analytics, said the reports author.

While users consider view functions such as the delivery of quotes, news and analysis as the most important mobile capabilities today, they see do functions such as trade execution as the most crucial in just a few years, said Dan Connell, Greenwich Associates managing director and author of the report.

While Connell downplayed the death of the traditional market data desktop, the Greenwich Associates research found that market data desktop users may be looking for new features but they are satisfied with todays products and services.

With one notable exception, however: integration. The reports subjects were roundly dissatisfied with the ability of market data technology to integrate with other tools on the trading desk, such as order and execution management systems.

As such, users will likely push chief technology officers and other purchasers of market data technology to look for more open systems and integration improvements, offering opportunity for providers to gain an edge in a well-established and saturated desktop market, said Connell.
