Traders On the Move

Here are some recent hires and promotions in the equities and derivatives trading world as Wall Street pros make that move, right now. Read which former Jefferies executive has moved to Cowen and what trading veteran has landed at Triad.

Dan Charney joins Cowen Group as managing director and co-head of equities in New York. Charney shares duties with co-head of equities Tom O’Mara overseeing Cowen’s domestic and international equity sales and trading businesses. Charney comes from Jefferies & Co., where he was most recently managing director and head of global electronic trading services and head of U.S. sales trading. Prior to that, he was head of West Coast equity distribution at UBS Securities. He reports to the chief executive of Cowen’s broker-dealer business, Jeffrey Solomon.


Jason Tobias joins Triad Securities Ltd. as managing director and chief business development officer for the New York-based brokerage firm’s London office. Tobias, a 15-year veteran, will look to expand Triad’s presence in Europe.  He was previously at Millennium Partners, where he spent his entire career. He joined as a trader in 1996 and in 2000 moved to head the European trading desk, where he spent eight years.


Investment bank Merriman Capital has made five key hires for its trading execution and capital markets services groups. In the trading execution group, Anthony Stamos joins as managing director and will be based in New York. Stamos, a 16-year veteran, comes from BGC/Cantor Fitzgerald and Direct Access Partners, where he specialized in technical trading of specific industry trends. He began his career on the Boston Stock Exchange.

Anthony LaBella, Kimberly Opiatowski and Wayne Yu also join the New York office as vice presidents. LaBella, a 17-year pro, is the former director of international trading at Direct Access Partners. Prior to that, he held sales trading positions at European Securities Network and ITG. Opiatowski, a 10-year veteran, comes to Merriman from Pali Capital, where she covered both hedge funds and long-only accounts. Yu, a 13-year veteran, was most recently vice president of international equities trading at Jefferies & Co., where he focused on trading Asian and Canadian ADRs. He began his career as an international equities trader at Merrill Lynch.

Joel Achramowicz joins Merriman’s capital markets services group as managing director of research and advisory services. Achramowicz, an 18-year veteran, has worked for Blaylock Robert Van, MDB Capital Group and Investec-PMG Capital. He is based in Merriman’s San Francisco office.


Oppenheimer has hired two professionals to run its newly opened Chicago office. Sales trader Donald O’Shaughnessy joins as a managing director and head of trading. O’Shaughnessy, a 20-year veteran, is charged with leading the new office and covering Midwest clients. Previously, he worked at Jefferies & Co. for four years as a sales trader covering the Midwest. He also did a stint at Susquehanna Financial in its Chicago office. He reports to Peter Feinberg, head of institutional equities trading. 

Also joining as a director of institutional trading is Dan Stahlschmidt, a two-year veteran and sales trader who also hails from Jefferies, where he was a vice president. Prior to that, he served as an aviator in the U.S. Navy. He reports to O’Shaughnessy.
