People On the Move

Ruth Colagiuri joins UNX as a managing director and head of product management in New York. Colagiuri, a 12-year veteran, was previously at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where she spent nine years and was most recently head of Americas electronic trading products. She reports to UNX chief executive Thomas Kim.


Deborah P. O’Brien joins Cavallo Financial Marketing Group, where she will market a wide range of brokerage services for Bay Crest Partners. O’Brien, a trading veteran of more than 20 years, spent her career as a sales trader before moving to the buyside to become head trader at Allstate Insurance Co. Most recently, she spent two years at EMS provider Firefly Capital, where she was involved in sales, implementation and training. O’Brien reports to CEO Greg Cavallo.


Jonathan Roth joins minority brokerage firm Blaylock Robert Van as a sales trader in New York. Roth, a 25-year trading veteran, had been on the buyside since 1987. He comes to Blaylock Robert Van from J. & W. Seligman & Co./RiverSource Investments. Roth reports to James Atwater, the firm’s executive vice president and national manager of sales trading.


 

Christopher McGuigan joins Tullett Prebon Information as head of Americas for the real-time price information group. McGuigan, a 15-year pro, is responsible for growing the firm’s business across the Americas. He previously worked at MarketAxess for nine years, where he managed the data services business. He reports to Frank Desmond, managing director and global head of sales.


Wedge Partners added four traders. They include Steve Doherty, a 20-year veteran who joins from the now-defunct Pali International, where he was director of sector trading. Doherty also worked for Cantor Fitzgerald and Jefferies & Co. Tony Giovati, a 35-year veteran, joins from Ticonderoga Securities, where he was a senior vice president. Giovati began his career with E.F. Hutton before moving on to trading and management roles with Merrill Lynch and later Prudential Securities. Also, Ryan Smith joins from Kevin Dann Partners. He began his career at Lehman Brothers and Alliance Capital. Finally, Justin Weil, a 17-year veteran, joins the firm. In recent years he has been a proprietary trader at both First New York and RBC/G-2 Trading.


Matthew Harris joins Madison Williams, formerly the capital markets business of Sanders Morris Harris Group, in its New York headquarters. Harris will focus on the energy and health-care sectors. He was previously with Tuohy Brothers Investment Research, an energy boutique, where he served as its head of trading. Prior to that, Harris worked at FBR Capital Markets and spent eight years at Morgan Stanley.


Vanessa Light joins Domestic Securities as a sales trader for broker-dealers. Light, a 23-year veteran in broker-dealer sales, previously was with Benchmark Securities, where she spent about three years. She reports to Rick Petrone, director of global markets.


Joe Minton joins Merriman & Co. as a managing director and head of derivatives, to launch an agency options trading desk for institutional investors. Previously, Minton worked for Parallax Fund as an options trader, responsible for market making and volatility trading. He was also a trader for Group One, where he made markets and traded volatility on the PCX and CBOE.


Melvin Securities hired three sales traders in its Chicago office. Joining the firm as senior equity traders are Kevin Burke, Emanuel Wilkes and Thomas Williams. Burke, a 20-year veteran, joins from Holland Capital Management, where he was head trader. Wilkes, a 10-year pro, traded global equities and municipal securities at Gardner Rich for the last three years. Williams, with 25 years’ experience, was founder and chief executive of Chicago-based market maker KWS Associates. He was also a board member of the Chicago Stock Exchange and has served on various industry committees. All three report to John Barone, director of equity sales and trading.


Maureen Shankar has joined ConvergEx Group’s research arm, Westminster Research Associates. Shankar, an 11-year pro, was previously head of commission management services at Instinet and was responsible for sales, operations and business development for the firm’s soft-dollar business.


Alison Crosthwait joins agency broker Instinet as director of global trading research. Crosthwait, a 10-year veteran, will lead the firm’s effort to publish global market microstructure research and other value-added content. Prior to this, she was head of research and a program trader covering quantitative investment firms at ITG Canada. Crosthwait also worked at Goldman Sachs’ high-frequency trading group and on Credit Suisse’s program desk. She reports to John Comerford, global head of trading research.


John Bajus joins Jefferies as head of international electronic trading in its London office. Bajus, a 16-year veteran, is leading the firm’s international expansion in electronic trading products, including portfolio and algorithmic trading, as well as direct market access. Prior to Jefferies, he was managing director and co-head of program and sales trading for the Americas at UBS, and founded the global program sales and trading desk at Bear Stearns. He reports to Daniel Charney, global head of electronic trading services.


Joseph Schenk was named chief executive officer of First New York Securities, a diversified global proprietary trading firm. Schenk, who joined First New York in 2009, was previously co-president of the firm. Prior to First New York, he was chief financial officer of Jefferies Group.


JonesTrading tapped sales trader Kevin Horgan to lead the agency brokerage’s expansion into Asia and the Pacific Rim. Horgan, a 22-year pro, will start trading Japanese equities for U.S. institutions first and then look to expand into Japanese buyside firms from Jones’ Honolulu office. Previously, he was a Japanese equities sales trader at BTIG and was in sales management on Merrill Lynch’s Japanese and European convertibles teams.


Don Cottage returns to State Street Global Markets as vice president in the firm’s equity sales and sales trading group. Cottage, a 10-year veteran, comes off a six-year stint in sales and management at Pipeline Trading’s Boston office. During his prior tenure at State Street, he was involved in electronic trading system sales and relationship management. He reports to managing director Dan Morgan.


Meridian Equity Partners hired six sales traders and one researcher for its New York office. Veterans Louise Hatcher, Adam Gershuny, Chris Alegre, John Guisio and Michael Hermanjoin as senior institutional traders. Separately, Joe Niles, a 10-year professional, joins as head of derivatives trading and as a sales trader.

Brian Lian, a 15-year veteran, joins as a managing director and leads the firm’s health-care research team. Previously, Lian was an executive director and senior biotech analyst at both Oppenheimer & Co. and CIBC world markets.

All report to senior managing partner Jonathan Acquafredda.


Kurt Zyla joins Russell Investments as regional director for listed derivatives. Zyla, a 21-year veteran, is responsible for portfolio management, development and listing of new derivatives products, and increasing sales of existing Russell Index-based derivatives. Before, he was with BNY Mellon for nearly 20 years. He reports to Rolf Agather, head of index research and innovation.


Bill Lyons joins New York-based Lek Securities, an electronic order and clearing firm, as an institutional salesman. Lyons, an 11-year professional, has done stints as an equity sales and equities options trader on both the buyside and sellside-including Galleon Group and Sedna Capital Management-and was most recently at Rafferty Capital Markets.


Marcus Marcuson joins SJ Levinson & Sons as a managing director in quantitative analytic sales. Marcuson, a 13-year pro, looks to boost the firm’s trade-cost analysis software sales on the West Coast after spending the last six years at software provider EST Technologies. He reports to Matthew Celebuski, head of quantitative analytics.


Ronan Walsh joins ConvergEx Group as vice president of global transition management. Walsh, a 15-year veteran based in Sydney, Australia, is responsible for transition management services throughout Australia and Asia. Previously, he built the Australian debt securities management business at Russell Investment Management and did a stint at Citi Global Markets as a transition manager. He reports to Kal Bassily, who heads the group.


Andrew Howell joins BIDS Trading as vice president of sales for the West Coast. Howell, a 25-year veteran, was a market maker on the Chicago Board of Trade and Pacific Stock Exchange before going into brokerage sales. For the last two years, he was vice president of sales in Fidelity’s electronic brokerage services group and before that was managing director of sales at Pipeline, establishing its San Francisco office. Howell reports to Marybeth Shay, senior managing director in sales and marketing.


Dan Weisberg and Michael Le Lion join software and data analysis vendor Panopticon. Weisberg, a 25-year pro, is a senior vice president of international sales and comes from Bishopsgate Financial. He reports to Chris Elsmore. Le Lion, a 10-year veteran, joins as vice president for North American business development and sales, and will also focus on order and execution management systems sales in Europe. Prior to joining Panopticon, he spent 11 years at software vendor Sybase managing client relationships. He reports to William De Geer.


Kamlesh Bhatia joins Jefferies Equities Capital Markets Group, where he will be responsible for private placement origination. Bhatia, a 10-year professional, has spent most of his career structuring and executing private equity and equity-linked transactions. Most recently, he worked at Piper Jaffray for a year and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he structured and executed $3 billion of privately negotiated equity and equity-linked transactions. He also worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and Credit Suisse. Bhatia reports to Mark Connelly, global head of equity capital markets.
