People On The Move

Brett Mock was elected as 2010 chairman of the Security Traders Association. Mock is senior sales trader at BTIG in San Francisco. He has been serving as STA vice chairman as well as co-chairman of the group’s trading issues committee.

"Brett has been very active in industry issues," said Peter Driscoll, the immediate past chairman of STA.

Mock’s career began some 15 years ago at Spear, Leeds & Kellogg. He traded Nasdaq securities for Spear’s Troster Singer subsidiary. Later he worked as a Nasdaq trader for Montgomery Securities. Afterward, he moved up to senior Nasdaq market maker, and after that, senior sales trader. In 2003, he joined Wachovia Capital Markets. There, he was director of capital markers for equity trading.

 


Baruch College finance professor Robert A. Schwartz received the first Award for Excellence from the World Federation of Exchanges last month. Schwartz, considered a pioneer in the study of market structure, won the award for his work on how dark liquidity pools and fragmentation affect market quality.

The veteran academic is the author and editor of numerous books and journal articles. The World Federation of Exchanges, based in Paris, is the trade association of more than 50 publicly regulated stock, futures and options exchanges.

 


Wade McGee joined Cheevers & Co. as an institutional sales trader. McGee, a 22-year veteran who joined from Jefferies & Co., will be covering accounts for both equities and fixed income. He reports to Kathy Cheevers, the firm’s chief executive.

 


Jeff Alexander, CFA, joins S.J. Levinson & Sons in Purchase, N.Y., as a managing director and product specialist in the firm’s quantitative research and trading group. Alexander previously spent three years at Bloomberg, where he ran the firm’s equity trading analytics business. There, he oversaw the development of trade-cost analysis and indication-of-interest products. Alexander reports to Matthew Celebuski, a former Bear Stearns executive who runs the firm’s quant group.

 


Val Guilford joins CastleOak Securities as a senior managing director and head of equity sales and trading in New York. Guilford, with more than 15 years experience, previously served as president and head global trader at Magna Securities Corp. CastleOak is a boutique investment bank and trades both equities and fixed income products.

 


The Securities and Exchange Commission named Brian Bussey associate director for trading practices and processing in the Division of Trading and Markets. The trading practices area focuses on short selling and market manipulation. Bussey previously served as assistant chief counsel in the Division of Trading and Markets and as counsel to former SEC chairmen William Donaldson and Harvey Pitt.

 


Dusti Smith has joined Pulse Trading in Dallas as a director in sales and trading. Smith, a seven-year veteran in electronic trading, will be primarily responsible for selling BlockCross ATS, an independently operated block crossing system owned by Pulse. She previously spent three years in New York as a director at ITG. There, she sold all of the firm’s products. Smith reports to Wally Sullivan, a managing partner of BlockCross.

 


Veteran financial journalist and editor Lewis Knox has been named director of TraderForum, a provider of conferences and research to its membership of buyside traders. Knox replaces Doug Hurry, who has moved to a business development role. Since 1984, Knox has held various senior editorial positions at Institutional Investor magazine, Alpha and within the newsletter group at II.

 


Ricardo Barquero joins the wholesaling arm of New York-based Murphy & Durieu as a trader of listed and OTC stocks. Barquero, a 10-year veteran, was previously with UBS and its predecessor, Schwab Capital Markets. He reports to Leucio Iacobelli and Chris Jordan, who head sales trading and trading, respectively.

 


Marc Muller joins Thomas Weisel Partners as a vice president in electronic trading sales. Muller, an eight-year veteran, joins from RBC Capital Markets, after seven years at UBS. Muller’s responsibilities are to expand the U.S. and Canadian business of Weisel Execution Services for all electronically traded products.

 


Order management provider Mixit has added three new hires–two for relationship management and one for product development. Richard "Rabbit" Ryan joins as a senior relationship manager. Ryan, a veteran of more than 25 years, was previously with Lava, where he spent three years supporting the sellside EMS and OMS platforms. Marie Shaub also joins Mixit as a senior relationship manager. Shaub, an 11-year veteran, was previously with Banc of America Securities. A former equities derivatives salesperson, Shaub also will be responsible for improving the firm’s options capabilities. Uday Patel joins as a vice president in product development from NYFIX. Patel, a 20-year veteran, will be working on enhancing the OMS’ capabilities and expanding the system into new asset classes.

 


Jesup & Lamont Securities hired two trading pros to open an institutional trading arm in Boston, where it currently houses a retail sales force. Scott T. Spottiswoode joins Jesup & Lamont to head institutional trading as a managing director. Spottiswoode, a 15-year veteran, will look to expand the Boston office. He joins after five years at Piper Jaffray. Christopher J. Eagan joins as a managing director and sales trader after four years at Banc of America Securities. Eagan, a veteran of more than 25 years, will cover accounts in Boston.

In New York, Ted Clarke joins the firms as a sales trader. A 22-year veteran, Clarke will work from the New York office and cover both U.S. and Canadian accounts. He came to Jesup after a two-year stint at Cuttone & Co. All report to Roger Morel, senior managing director of trading.

 


Heather Keane joins Fidessa’s New York sales support team. Keane, a six-year industry veteran, was previously with Citi and Lava Trading, where she worked in marketing.

 


Geneva, Ill.-based Fox River Execution last month opened a new office in Midtown Manhattan. Fox River, an agency brokerage offering algorithmic trading services, has a staff of five in the new office, three of whom are salesmen. Richard Sansaricq heads sales and runs the office. The game plan is to at least double the size of the staff in New York, according to Cheryl Gilberg, who heads marketing firm-wide. Additional hires would include salesmen, traders and technology staff.

 


Thomas M. Hearden joins ITG as a director and sales trader. Hearden, a 21-year veteran, joins after five years at VDM Institutional Brokerage. Prior to that, he spent 15 years on the buyside and headed trading at Strong Capital Management from 1994 to 2004.
