Pete Forlenza co-founded New York-based hedge fund Outpost Investment Group and is acting as its chief executive officer. Forlenza was most recently global head of equities at Banc of America Securities. He began his career at Salomon Brothers and is credited with being one of the industry’s pioneers in program trading, a business he built from inception for Salomon.


George Bodine was named head of trading research at QSG, a Naperville, Ill.-based firm that specializes in quantitative analysis for traders and portfolio managers. Bodine, a longtime buyside trader who spent the last 12 years as director of trading at General Motors Asset Management, retired from that position in November. He will open a New York office. At GMAM, he oversaw the trading practices of more than 50 firms that managed money for the GM pension fund. Bodine has been a frequent speaker at industry events and was featured in the July 2005 issue of Traders Magazine.


ITG beefed up its sales and trading ranks with five new hires. They include three former Lehman Brothers investment pros: Alan Polo in New York, Robin Kaukonen in San Francisco and Matthew Ambrogi in Chicago. Sara Baker, previously with Merrill Lynch, joins ITG’s Boston office, while John Carillo, formerly of JPMorgan, now works on the trading desk in New York.


Richard Chmiel joins tick-data processor OneMarketData as vice president of sales and marketing, Chmiel was previously a vice president of global sales and client services at Skyler Technology. He has 25 years’ experience selling vendor services, including executive sales stints at Bloomberg, LatentZero and SunGard Trading Systems.


Dallas-based Williams Financial Group has expanded into institutional equity trading, hiring five sales traders. Dan Mele, a 13-year veteran previously with Jefferies & Co., runs the desk. The other sales traders are: Vic Topper, a 16-year veteran previously with RBC Capital Markets; David Hart, a 26-year veteran who moved from Jefferies & Co.; Steve Capurso, a 12-year veteran previously with Goldman Sachs; and Mark Hall, a 15-year veteran who has spent most of his career at Dallas-based CAPIS.


Block trading firm JonesTrading hired Tom Steen to head its new global derivatives business and to expand its presence in Canadian equities. Steen, an 18-year veteran who held a number of senior positions in Merrill Lynch’s equity-linked product group, joins from Toronto-based DDX Capital Partners, where he headed risk management. He is expected to split most of his time between New York and Toronto.


Ian Kindler, CFA, joins Capital Institutional Services as director of options trading and will oversee the desk. Kindler, a 12-year veteran, has worked as a floor broker for Coast Options, a market maker for Professional Edge Fund and most recently as a proprietary trader for Peak6.


Stefan Frirdich joins Pure Trading as a salesman for the alternative exchange, which competes with the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) in Canada. Frirdich was previously with the TSX, where he worked in finance, product management and sales.


Murphy & Durieu in New York landed an experienced team of sales traders for its broker-dealer desk last month, when it hired James Lewis, Leucio Iacobelli and Dan Gordon. They join from UBS’s broker-dealer desk. Lewis, Iacobelli and Gordon have worked together since 2003, when they were all at Schwab Capital Markets. They came to UBS when it bought Schwab’s wholesaling arm in 2004.


Dan Weingarten and Sean Malloy have been promoted to senior vice presidents and co-directors of global sales and marketing at brokerage firm Penson Worldwide. The two previously headed U.S. sales and marketing, since joining the firm in July of 2007. They will continue to oversee U.S. sales and marketing at Penson, which offers execution, clearing, settlement, custody and technology products. Before joining Penson, Weingarten and Malloy were the co-heads of sellside sales at NYFIX Millennium.


Daniel Farrell joined Putnam Investments as head of equity trading. Farrell is a 15-year trading veteran who was previously with RiverSource Investments in Boston. Farrell replaces Rich Block, who left the firm. Farrell came to Putnam after it brought in former RiverSource portfolio managers Nick Thakore and Robert Ewing to lead large-cap equity.


Newedge hired two former Bear Stearns sales traders for its New York office. Seth Kadushin joins the equities desk as a senior sales trader for both single stocks and program trading. Phil Pulcini, a former senior managing director at Bear Stearns, joins the firm’s options sales desk. Newedge is the newly formed firm from the merger of Calyon Financial and Société Générale’s Fimat.
