Alan Rubenfeld joined BNP Paribas’ global execution services group as a managing director. Rubenfeld, previously a managing director at Deutsche Bank’s program trading desk for nearly 11 years, is working at BNP Paribas’ New York office. He reports to John Bohan, who runs the desk and was also previously at Deutsche Bank.


Sean McFarland joined Sanford C. Bernstein’s program trading desk as a salesman. McFarland was previously a director at Deutsche Bank. McFarland reports to Dave Liles, global head of electronic trading.


Michael Cobern rejoined Tradeware Global as a senior salesman. Cobern, previously at order management vendor Fidessa for nearly two years, is selling FIX connectivity and global trading platforms at Tradeware.


David Barnett joined agency firm Pulse Trading in New York as a senior vice president, institutional sales. Barnett, who earlier worked at electronic block trading firms Harborside Securities and OptiMark, was most recently a vice president in the program trading group at BNY ConvergEx.


Mike Barclay, previously with TriAct Canada, was tapped to head broker-dealer sales for ITG Canada. Barclay launched TriAct Canada this past summer.


Frank Masi joined a newly formed institutional trading arm of Domestic Securities, an Edison, N.J.-based wholesaler. Masi, who had previously headed sales and trading at Instinet, is a senior vice president and director of sales at Rushmore Capital, the start-up. He will oversee the build-out of the agency firm’s sales trading desk.


Citi made some changes in equities.

Jim O’Donnell was appointed head of global distribution. He was previously head of equities for the Americas for three years. He will now be responsible for all distribution teams, including sales, sales trading and relationship management across products and regions.

Rick Bartlett, formerly co-head of U.S. equity capital markets, succeeds O’Donnell.

On the trading side, Bret Engelkemier was named global head of systematic trading. He was previously Citi’s head of equities trading for the Americas. Now Engelkemier will lead trading and technology for delta one market making and internalization; listed options market making; statistical arbitrage; principal programs; and global development of market center relationships and investments.

Engelkemier reports to Peter Santoro, Citi’s global head of equity trading. Replacing Engelkemier is Kevin Russell. He will also be responsible for credit risk and credit-related trading strategies in global equities. Russell previously ran Citi’s convertible bonds group for three years.


Jay Indovino joined Rosenblatt Securities as a managing director. Indovino, a veteran of both Bridge Trading Co. and SunGard Institutional Brokerage, will work out of St. Louis and be involved in sales, business development and strategic initiatives.


Frank Burnett was named vice president and head of the options trading desk for BNY ConvergEx. Burnett had previously managed LiquidPoint’s Amex floor operations for the last two and a half years, before BNY ConvergeEx purchased LiquidPoint earlier this summer. Burnett has also held various listed options- and equities-related positions at Bear Stearns.


Dmitri Galiametdinov joined Credit Suisse AES as a director and head of AES’ liquidity strategy initiatives. Galiametdinov, previously with Direct Edge ECN, will be responsible for establishing new liquidity relationships, as well as negotiating deals with ATSs, ECNs and broker-dealers. His role is to ensure that the firm’s algorithmic strategies continue to maximize liquidity, fill rates and price improvement, according to Dan Mathisson, who heads AES.


Mark Lineberry was named to head up the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Market Surveillance, the division that monitors trading on exchanges. He was formerly an SEC branch chief.

Ed Boyle was hired as head of NYSE Arca Options. Boyle joined from TD Securities, where he was vice president and director, equity derivatives. Boyle replaces Jon Werts, who joined Merrill Lynch in Chicago as a managing director in its derivatives group. Werts will be responsible for increasing the firm’s presence in the options marketplace and overall options strategy.


Joanne Hill joined TriAct Canada as a vice president in sales. TriAct Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of ITG Canada, offers a dark-book marketplace called Matchnow. Hill, previously with Perimeter Financial’s crossing network BlockBook, reports to CEO Wendy Rudd.


Jefferies & Co. hired two traders from Morgan Stanley to help build a special situations desk. Jordan White was named head of the new department. He has 15 years of experience in the securities industry, including eight focused on special situations securities position trading and sales. There, he was instrumental in building that firm’s special situations trading effort.

Brian Smith joined Jefferies as a senior vice president and special situations sector trader. Smith, formerly an executive director and special situations trader with Morgan Stanley, has 12 years of trading experience.


Thomas Weisel Partners made several hires.

The San Francisco-based firm brought on Andrew Tuthill and Daniel Covatta, two senior traders from UBS, to launch a special situations desk. The team will focus on sourcing liquidity via overnight block trades and reverse inquiries for investment banking, institutional, private equity and high-net-worth clients in a confidential manner, according to Tony Stais, director of trading. Weisel also made hires for its traditional block trading efforts.

Jack Collins and Jake Hunter will trade its consumer book. They are based in New York. Robert Redfield and Tony DelCarmine were also hired for the electronic trading group. Redfield came from Bear Stearns, where he was the senior program trading professional on the West Coast. DelCarmine joined from UBS.


Industry veterans Art Pacheco and Warren Shore are launching a new brokerage firm specializing in nanotechnology. Based in Coral Gables, Fla., iNano Capital Markets expects to begin providing research in the fourth quarter. The firm will offer investment banking as well as trading. Jim O’Neill, formerly of Robinson-Humphrey and JonesTrading, will run the Atlanta desk, and Pat Davis, formerly of PaineWebber, will manage the Coral Gables desk.


Joe Cangemi was named co-head of electronic trading sales at BNY ConvergEx Group. Cangemi, who previously headed the firm’s Reg NMS sales and trading implementation effort, runs sales with Derek Morris. Before that he was a governor of the New York Stock Exchange Group. Cangemi, a longtime broker on the floor of the NYSE, will be responsible for expanding business for BNY ConvergEx’s trading front end and for bringing greater liquidity into its dark pools. Cangemi reports to Paul Basmajian, head of client-directed and alternative trading.
