Listed Options Volume Up 20 Percent at 355 Million Contracts in December

U.S listed options volume bounced back in December after a dismal November.

According to Tabb Group, U.S. listed options volumes rebounded in December, rising 20 percent compared to November, coming in at 355 million contracts. November listed options activity was 294.8 million.

According to the market consultancy’s LiquidityMatrix, U.S. listed options trading volume totaled 354.6 million contracts in December, just under the 2014 monthly average of 355.4 million contracts.

Total volume for the year measured 4.27 billion contracts, 3.7 percent higher than total 2013 volume of 4.11 billion contracts and second only to 2011’s 4.6 billion total.

Volatility, as measured by the CBOE VIX index averaged 16.31 in December, up 22 percent from the 13.41 average in November 2014.
