Wedbush Recruits ex-Nomura Exec as Head of Equity Trading

Wedbush Securities hired Ian Winer to head up its equity trading department, filling a vacancy. Until recently, Winer was head of U.S. cash trading at Nomura Securities.

Winer spent two years at Nomura which recently announced it was merging its U.S. equities operation with that of sister company Instinet. The move was expected to result in about 100 job losses, one brokerage executive told Traders Magazine last month (See article dated September 6.)

Winer has worked for several buyside and sellside organizations over the past 10 years or so, according to a filing with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Besides Nomura, he worked for Banc of America Securities and Salomon Smith Barney. On the buyside, Winer worked at hedge funds SAC Capital and Galleon Group.

Winer will manage all aspects of trading for Wedbush’s equities division, according to a company statement. That includes the management and supervision of all sales traders and position traders, as well as the management of capital commitment and risk controls. He is also charged with increasing the firm’s interactions with clients.

At Wedbush, Winer replaces Cyrus Pirasteh as director of equity trading. Pirasteh joined the firm in January 2011 as head of equity trading, technologies and operations. He now runs Wedbush’s private shares group, according to a spokesperson.
