TRADERS ON THE MOVE: Oppenheimer & Co. Bulks Up

Mike Riley joined Wells Fargo Securities as co-head of equity trading. The veteran equity derivatives trader will partner with Matt Brown to run the desk. As part of his remit, Riley will help to build out Wells’ equity derivatives business. The exec spent most of the past 12 years as an equity derivatives trader at UBS, where he was co-head of the operation between 2009 and 2012.

Shane Swanson rejoined Citigroup as president of its Automated Trading Desk unit. Swanson was previously in charge of compliance at ATD before departing in 2010 to launch a start-up market making firm, Eladian Partners. That firm shut down last year. Swanson and his brother Steve Swanson founded ATD in the late 1990s and sold it to Citi in 2007.

Oppenheimer & Co. hired four executives for its equity trading operation. Doron Barness joined as a sales trader. He was formerly with Wedge Securities and, before that, Goldman Sachs. Matt Weitz joined as head of institutional execution strategy, a new position. Weitz, a veteran of electronic trading, was previously at Nomura. John Gill joined as a sector trader, handling energy, limited partnerships, and industrials. Gill last worked at Cowen & Co. Steve Yung also joined as a sector trader, handling specialty finance and banking names. Yung spent about 12 years at J.P. Morgan Securities.

Jim Muller joined Institutional Investor as executive director of business development. The move marks a return to the magazine and conference organization for Muller who ran Trader Forum, a quarterly conference for buyside traders, in the 1990s. Muller spent about 17 years on the sellside in various sales and marketing positions, including 14 years at ITG. Most recently he worked at Weeden & Co.

Geffrey Gioia joined Northcoast Research in Cleveland as a sales trader. He was previously at Longbow Research and, before that, at Midwest Research/FTN Equity. Gioia is currently on the board of the Security Traders Association and is a past president of the STA’s Ohio chapter. Northcoast was spun out of Gioia’s original firm, FTN Equity in May 2009.
