TRADERS ON THE MOVE: IEX Grabs Security Head, WSA Hires LaBranche To Grow Business

Benjamin Smith joined IEX as the private trading venue’s head of information security. Smith, a 19 year veteran, is charged with bolstering the venue’s security as it prepares to become a full-fledged U.S. stock exchange. He was previously director of information security at BlackRock, whee worked the last seven years, becoming its first chief information security officer. Prior to that, he handled security for the foreign exchange trading venue FXall.

Wall Street Access hired Mike LaBranche as its new vice president in business development. LaBranche, a 19 year pro, spent the last 3 1/2 years at Cowen Group. LaBranche was a senior managing director and a member of the Board of Directors of Cowen Group. Before the merger with Cowen Group, he was chief executive officer and chairman of LaBranche & Co Inc. and served in that capacity until the company’s acquisition by Cowen Group Inc. in June 2011. His work affiliations include being a member of the New York Stock Exchange Board of Executives, the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and a Director of the NYSE Foundation. He was also a director of Lava Trading, director of the Securities Industry Automation Corporation and a Board member of the Securities Industry Association. He reports to Sean Kelleher.

Algomi, a fixed income market information vendor hired Jesper Bruun-Olsen as its head of Asia-Pacific operations. Bruun-Olsen, a pro with 24 years of experience, is charged with establishing Algomi’s presence in Singapore and Hong Kong in 2015, expanding the Algomi Honeycomb network to facilitate APAC bond market liquidity. He comes from Tradeweb, where he was a director. Before joining Tradeweb, Bruun-Olsen was responsible for fixed income sales to international institutional investors at Nordea’s offices in Copenhagen and Tokyo.

Nasdaq OMX has appointed Lou Modano to be in charge of the exchange operator’s electronic defenses. Modano fills the spot vacated by Mark Graff, Nasdaq’s chief information security officer after leaving the firm. Modano will also keep his position as global head of infrastructure services. Modano joined Nasdaq in 2009 and previously worked at NYSE Euronext.
