Here are recent hires and promotions in the equities trading world as Wall Street pros make that move, right now.

Joe Tama joins Vandham Securities as a managing director in the firm’s international equity sales trading group. Tama, a 29-year trading veteran, began in 1968 at Carl Marks & Co. in the back office, before moving into trading in 1982. He has worked at Smith New Court, Merrill Lynch and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. At Smith New Court, Tama created the international broker-dealer desk. The firm was acquired by Merrill Lynch in the mid-’90s. He reports to Chris Catrini, who heads OTC trading.


Tom Rice, a longtime Nasdaq sales trader and executive at Credit Suisse, retired in February. After rising to head U.S. equities sales trading at Credit Suisse, Rice took on a new role in human resources in 2007. He moved to head a new internal mobility initiative that grooms talented employees for more senior roles in the firm. Rice spent 26 years at Credit Suisse, including 21 in trading, where he helped build its Nasdaq desk into a powerhouse. He will continue as a coach and mentor and is expected to earn an executive coaching certificate at the Newfield Institute in the coming months, an internal memo said. Rice sits on the board of Wings Over Wall Street, which sponsors an annual industry gala to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Rice is a former co-chairman of the event, which has raised roughly $1 million each year over the last decade.


Hitesh Mittal joins AQR Capital Management as head of algorithmic trading. Prior to moving to AQR in January, Mittal spent nearly 11 years at ITG, where he was head of liquidity management and earlier ran algorithmic trading. He began his Wall Street career as a consultant at Merrill Lynch, after spending three years as a software engineer at Siemens.


Jim Muller joins Weeden & Co. as a senior business development manager in the electronic products group. Muller, with more than 20 years’ experience, was previously a managing director and head of business development at ITG, where he spent 14 years. Prior to that, he worked at Fidelity Capital Markets and headed New York institutional sales. That came after a six-year stint at Institutional Investor’s conference division, where he ran three groups, including TraderForum.


Steve Pickett joins GXS, a global provider of cloud-based connectivity and data services. Pickett, a 26-year veteran, joins as an account executive in Chicago and will be focusing on capital markets in the firm’s financial services division. He was previously with Firm58, where he spent two years. Pickett started his career with Bridge Trading, before moving to Reuters as a senior vice president in sales. He reports to Marc Sprecher, GXS’s senior vice president of sales in financial services.
