>>Bank of America Merrill Lynch hired Tracy Caliendo. She joins the bulge firm as a managing director and head of Americas equity hedge fund services. Based in New York, she is slated to join in September and will report jointly to Jason Crosby, global head of portfolio products distribution, and Scott Bacigalupo, Americas head of cash equity sales. Caliendo will be responsible for enhancing the firm’s hedge fund relationships and creating new ones, emphasizing electronic trading.
A 16-year pro, Caliendo spent her entire career with Goldman Sachs, where most recently she was co-head of Americas electronic trading sales and coverage. There, she was responsible for senior relationship management of its hedge fund business across its equity platform.
>>Charles Sweeney joined JMP Group as a managing director and director of trading in the San Francisco-based firm’s New York office. As such, Sweeney will have responsibility for JMP Securities’ institutional equity trading and sales trading activities. Sweeney will report to Tom Wright, JMP’s newly hired director of equities.
Before joining JMP Securities, Sweeney spent seven months as co-head of U.S. equity trading at Cantor Fitzgerald & Co. Before that, he was head of cash equity trading and sales trading at Susquehanna Financial Group. Sweeney is a veteran of Merrill Lynch’s equity trading department, having spent 16 years there from 1991 until 2007.
>>Bank of America Merrill Lynch hired Dave Lucerne as a director to trade single-stock options. Lucerne trades the health care industry. He reports to Ali Agboatwalla, head of U.S. single-stock equity derivatives trading.
>>Valar Mihan was promoted to global head of equity trading at UBS and joined its equity management committee. Mihan replaces Ryan Primmer, the bank’s former global head of equity trading, who departed in April to concentrate on developing new opportunities. Mihan served under Primmer at UBS over the last year. Before that, from February 1995 to 2011, Mihan held a series of senior roles at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, including head of Americas derivatives trading, chief operating officer of global equity derivatives, head of CEMEA cash and derivatives trading, and various other leadership positions across U.S. and European trading and risk. He now reports to Mike Stewart, UBS’s global head of equities.
>>Merriman Capital hired two sales traders, both from the now defunct ThinkEquity Partners. San Francisco-based Merriman brought on Jack Monopoli as a managing director and head of advisory trading and market making. Monopoli was previously head of trading at ThinkEquity. Merriman also hired Bill Southern as a sales trader. Southern was a sales trader at ThinkEquity. That firm shut down late last year.
>>Cantor Fitzgerald has hired Stan Craig as a vice president on its broker-dealer sales desk. Craig, a 14-year professional, is now responsible for growing the firm’s NMS, OTC and international business flow. Prior to this, he spent seven years at Vertical Group and Wachovia Securities. He reports to James Smyth, managing director and head of the broker-dealer desk.
>>Peter Grace joined Nasdaq in equities sales. Grace previously held a similar position with NYSE Arca for more than 10 years.
>>BTIG made three hires in its New York and Atlanta offices. In New York, BTIG brought on Glen Sulam and Patrick Boyle. Sulam joined as a managing director and a sales trader, covering large institutional clients. He spent 14 years at UBS, where he was head of cash trading and sales trading. Boyle joined as a managing director and a sector trader. Boyle was most recently at CRT Capital Group. Before that, he was at FBR Capital Markets. In Atlanta, BTIG brought on Stephen Sibilia as a director and a sales trader. Sibilia was most recently at Macquarie Securities, where he covered U.S.-based hedge funds and mutual funds.
>> Investment Technology Group added three pros to its program trading and single-stock desks. On the portfolio side, ITG hired two from Knight Capital Group. Jenkins Marshall joined as a managing director and head of U.S. portfolio trading. Tom Caputo also joined as a managing director on the desk. Both traders spent nine years at Knight. They report to Mike Marrale, ITG’s head of research, sales and trading. The brokerage also hired Brian Fenske from Nomura Securities as a sector trader covering technology, media and telecommunications.
>>Shane Swanson rejoined Citigroup as president of its Automated Trading Desk unit. Swanson was previously in charge of compliance at ATD before departing in 2010 to launch a start-up market-making firm, Eladian Partners. That firm shut down last year. Swanson and his brother Steve Swanson founded ATD in the late 1990s and sold it to Citi in 2007.
>>Andrew Larkin, a longtime electronic trading executive, joined Bloomberg Tradebook. Larkin left Investment Technology Group in December as a result of downsizing. The executive spent nearly 20 years at ITG in two stints, with various sales and management responsibilities. Larkin holds similar duties at Tradebook as a “team leader.”
>>Mike Riley joined Wells Fargo Securities as co-head of equity trading. The veteran equity derivatives trader will partner with Matt Brown to run the desk. As part of his remit, Riley will help build out Wells’ equity derivatives business. The exec spent most of the past 12 years as an equity derivatives trader at UBS, where he was co-head of the operation between 2009 and 2012.
>>Geffery Gioia joined Northcoast Research in Cleveland as a sales trader. He was previously at Longbow Research and, before that, at Midwest Research/FTN Equity. Gioia is on the board of the Security Traders Association and is a past president of the STA’s Ohio chapter. Northcoast was spun out of Gioia’s original firm, FTN Equity, in May 2009.
>>Oppenheimer & Co. hired four executives for its equity trading operation. Doron Barness joined as a sales trader. He was formerly with Wedge Securities and, before that, Goldman Sachs. Matt Weitz joined as head of institutional execution strategy, a new position. Weitz, a veteran of electronic trading, was previously at Nomura. John Gill joined as a sector trader, handling energy, limited partnerships and industrials. Gill last worked at Cowen & Co. Steve Yung also joined as a sector trader, handling specialty finance and banking names. Yung spent about 12 years at J.P. Morgan Securities.
>>Three former Direct Access Partners traders have landed new jobs. Darren Croce joined Charlotte, N.C., agency brokerage Elevation LLC as a sales trader based in Jupiter, Fla. Karen Kowalewski joined the St. Louis office of North South Capital, a Chicago agency brokerage. Mike Cronin joined Wall Street Access in New York.
