Instinet’s Daily Volume Jumps 43 Percent in August

Agency-only brokerage Instinet, announced today U.S. equities average daily volume hit 431 million shares, a 43 percent jump from July. It averaged 301 million shares per day that month.

The broker saw its market share climb in August to 4.09 percent, up from July’s 2.86 percent.

For US-listed options, the firm’s ADV grew to 363,000 contracts, which equals a 1.54 percent market share or a 43 percent increase over July’s average of 428,000 options contracts per day that changed hands.

However, the firm saw a record 613,000 contracts executed on August 8 due to that day’s heightened volatility.

"In August we continued to see strong growth in both US equities and options volumes," said Jonathan Kellner, president of the Americas at Instinet. "While volumes were up Street-wide, we were particularly pleased to see our core institutional flow surge to the extent that it did during the month, indicating that the buyside continues to look to Instinet as a safe harbor during periods of extreme volatility."

The volume figures, including shares traded in its crossing products, were all single counted and the overall market volume figure comes from Thomson Reuters.
