Instinet Promotes Kellner to CEO

A look at the financial industry's prominent hires, promotions and other notable happenings inside Wall Street's trading community and beyond

Instinet announced Jonathan Kellner, has taken over the chief executive reins from Fumiki Kondo. Kondo has been designated to become head of Nomura Asset Management’s overseas client division in Tokyo. Prior to being named chief executive, Kellner served as head of Instinet’s Americas businesses. He joined the Nomura Group in 2003 and moved to Instinet in 2007 following Nomura’s acquisition of the company. Kellner previously held senior trading and technology positions at Charles Schwab, Investment Technology Group and Morgan Stanley.

HSBC announced that Renato Naigeborin joined the company as head of equity trading for Latin America. Naigeborin will be based in Brazil, where he will manage the investment bank’s suite of Latin America equity products, such as structured equity derivatives, prime and cash. Naigeborin will work with the HSBC sales, asset and structured finance, and global banking teams to develop new products and ultimately bring the bank’s global equity offerings to Latin American clients. Before joining HSBC, Naigeborin was a partner at BR Partners, a Brazilian boutique investment bank. He also served as head of equity trading at Citibank Brazil and previously, as head of equity derivatives at Merrill Lynch. He reports to Otavio Mendes, head of global markets for Brazil, and Delfos Machado, head of equity trading for the Americas.


Dallas-based agency-only broker Capis hired three people for its newly created wrap trading business. The team is led by ex-Cowen pros Mark Viani, as director of managed accounts solutions, and Robert McHeffey, as a sales executive. Viani, a 28-year pro, most recently worked as managing director in Cowen’s electronic products group. McHeffey, also a 28-year veteran, worked alongside Viani as a sales executive. McHeffey most recently was co-director of the electronic products group at Cowen. Capis also hired Jessica Oliveras-Yu as a client service representative. Oliveras-Yu, a 16-year market pro, was also most recently at Cowen, as a vice president in the electronic products group.


Northill Capital, a London-based asset manager, hired Ravi Thakur as head of Americas distribution. Thakur is also charged with opening the firm’s first U.S. office, in New York. Thakur will oversee sales targeted at specialist asset managers. He will also be responsible for distribution of Northill investment strategies to U.S.-based institutions and consultants. Thakur joins Northill from Amundi Asset Management USA, where he had been head of distribution since 2011. Previously, Thakur was with BNY Mellon Asset Management, where he was head of its separately managed account business and offshore distribution for BNY Mellon/Dreyfus in New York. Before that, he was country manager for Mellon in Luxembourg.


Bay Crest Partners, an agency-only institutional brokerage, hired Kumaran Vijayakumar in the newly created role of president. Vijayakumar will focus on helping Bay Crest grow its trading business and develop its trading platform. He also joins William Mulligan and Anthony Riccio Jr. as a partner in the firm. Vijayakumar joins Bay Crest after leading the build-out of MF Global’s equity derivatives business. Prior to MF Global, he was a managing director and head of volatility trading with primary responsibility for the equity derivatives and convertibles products with Bank of America Securities. He was a principal and index/ETF options trader at Citigroup from 2000 until 2002. From 1996 to 1999, he was an index options trader at Goldman Sachs & Co.


Dallas-based Esposito Securities hired Michael Lloyd as an equity sales trader. Esposito, a 17-year veteran, is charged with opening a satellite office in Morristown, N.J., and growing the firm’s institutional business in the Middle Atlantic region. He spent the last year at Janney Montgomery and before that was with Knight Capital for seven years. He reports to head of institutional sales trading Erik Johnson.


Ellyn Coyne joined KCG Group as a senior ETF sales representative. Coyne, a pro with more than 20 years of experience in ETFs, equities and futures, will help grow the firm’s client base, educate clients about KCG ETF trading capabilities, and market to RIAs, asset managers and pension funds. She comes from Cantor Fitzgerald, where she spent the last two years as director of ETF sales, overseeing client relations and sales efforts. She reports to Chris Hempstead, head of ETF sales for KCG in the U.S.


Independent execution and research broker ITG has named 15 new managing directors. The new class of executives comes from five offices within the firm. The new managing directors are: Eric Blake, New York; Ariel Brand, Culver City; Dion Cooney, Sydney; Kenneth Doerr, New York; J.T. Farley, New York; Byron Hogoboom, Culver City; David Howard, Calgary; Hitesh Joshi, New York; Lindsey Norris, New York; Mark O’Sullivan, London; Raghunathan Rangarajan, New York; Scott Slattery, New York; Matthew Timberlake, New York; John Tomlinson, New York; Michael Wilder, New York.


ConvergEx expanded its sales trading desk hiring Sean Croll, in San Francisco, as a senior vice president, and Alexander Krasutsky, in New York, as a vice president. Croll previously served as a director and equity sales trader at Cowen and Company, and held senior trading positions at RBC Capital Markets, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey and Thomas Weisel Partners. Krasutsky has spent the past 12 years as senior vice president for trading at KBW, and previously served as a trader at Tucker Anthony. He began his career with clerk and floor broker positions at the New York Stock Exchange and Merrill Lynch.


The firm also brought on Paul Finnegan in its LiquidPoint options business as director of software sales. Finnegan will be responsible for developing LiquidPoint’s market data products and will also manage the sales of its LDB portfolio margining tools. He will be based in Chicago. Previously, Finnegan served as chief executive officer of Livevol, a provider of equity and index options technology and services. Prior to Livevol, he was senior vice president at NYSE Euronext and co-CEO of the NYSE Arca Options Exchange, where he was responsible for strategic development, market structure and operations. He began his career at the Chicago Board Options Exchange.


E-distribution firm Caplin Systems announced John Ashworth as its new chief operating officer. Ashworth, a veteran with more than 30 years’ experience, takes responsibility for global sales and marketing. He has worked at IBM, FENICS, GFI, Apama, FXall and most recently Thomson Reuters. He is based in Caplin’s London office.


Samuel Hikspoors joined Atlanta-based money manager Invesco Ltd. as senior quantitative researcher in its global trading department. Hikspoors was previously a quantitative researcher at RGM Advisors, responsible for developing high-frequency trading and statistical-arbitrage strategies. Hikspoors holds a Ph.D in mathematical finance from University of Toronto and will report to Saurabh Srivastava, who reports to Kevin Cronin.


Credit Suisse hired market analyst and strategist Cheyenne Morgan for its client intelligence group. Morgan, an 11 year pro in the business, comes from TD Ameritrade Institutional where she did a brief stint as a senior analyst in its competitive intelligence & client experience group. Before that, she spent the last six years at Tabb Group.


RiverCross Securities hired Chris Demaso as a managing director and head of sales. Demaso, a 22 year pro, comes from Bank of America Merrill Lynch where he was a managing director in global sales for over four and half years. He has also worked at Fidessa and Citigroup’s Lava trading unit in sales capacities.
